Property Description for 320 West 139th Street, HOUSE

Experience the harmonious blend of historic grandeur and modern luxury in this meticulously renovated prewar Neo-Grec style townhouse, nestled within the sought-after Central and West Harlem Dorrance Brookes Historic District. As you stroll along the serene tree-lined street, you'll be captivated by the timeless charm and elegant fa ade that welcome you home.

Step inside to discover a true treasure trove of history. The original wood stairs, lovingly preserved since 1898, beckon you to ascend and explore the layers of the past. Exposed beams gracefully traverse the ceilings, a testament to the craftsmanship of yesteryears and a reminder of the stories this townhouse holds.

This residence effortlessly caters to modern living needs with its versatile layout, flexibly accommodating a spacious 4-bedroom configuration complemented by three full bathrooms. The heart of the home is the open-concept kitchen and living area, where lofty ceilings create an airy atmosphere, and multiple deco fireplaces infuse warmth and character. The perfect marriage of old and new, this space becomes even cozier with the presence of a wood-burning fireplace framed by exposed brick.

Beyond its historic charm, this townhouse offers modern comforts that elevate daily life. A washer/dryer brings convenience, while the finished basement opens the door to endless possibilities - be it a recreational haven, lounge space, or organized storage area. The kitchen boasts high-end appliances, including a dishwasher, ensuring that culinary endeavors are met with style and efficiencies.

The house retains its historic high brownstone stoop with decorative newel posts, and its main entrance features a historic wood-and-glass double-leaf door and transom with decorative brownstone enframement. Decorative spandrel panels sit below the first story windows, which are framed by pilasters, a decorative center panel, and brownstone sill bands. The shallow projecting bay runs from the second story to the cornice and has an ornately decorated base and spandrel panels, and a wide decorative spandrel panel below the third-story windows. Stone lintel and sill bands run across the width of the facade at the second- and third-story windows. The building's intact metal cornice features Renaissance Revival-style modillions and a wide frieze with stylized details.

As you step outside, the expansive private backyard unfolds, a rarity in the heart of Harlem. This urban oasis becomes your personal retreat, where you can unwind, entertain, and immerse yourself in the vibrancy of the city. Immerse yourself in the surroundings, with St. Nicholas Park and Hudson River Park's tennis courts just steps away. Delve into the history of the Sugar Hill historic district, or engage in the intellectual ambiance of Columbia University and City College. A plethora of charming cafes and restaurants cater to your every craving.

Effortless commuting is at your fingertips with the convenience of multiple subway lines - A, B, C, 2, and 3 - ensuring easy access to all corners of the city.

Harlem | Manhattan

Quick Profile

The neighborhood called West Harlem by the locals is known as Manhattanville to neighborhood newcomers. The area is culturally diverse and might be considered a microcosm of the city as a whole.

Columbia University has recently expanded into the area, which is attracting student residents from all over the world. Together with students from the City College of New York and young professionals fleeing higher prices in other neighborhoods, this influx of younger residents has brought with it more restaurants and bars on W 125th Street to serve this clientele. There are also new ventures, like a rock-climbing gym, to cater to the interests of these students and young professionals. At the same time, there are many small, family-owned shops and restaurants that have been anchors of the neighborhood for multiple generations.

The area has been through a housing upgrade, as older properties have been renovated and abandoned properties have been razed to make room for new development. There are still reasonably priced apartments available. Young professionals are finding that there is a certain cachet to living in West Harlem. It provides a convenient commute to the city and all of its amenities, while providing a sense of escape at the end of a long work day.

While rentals are popular with the student population, the young professionals are delighted to find pre-war brownstones, pre-war co-ops (including some income-capped HDFCs for lower- and middle-income buyers), and post-war condos that they can afford, although prices are rising. Some new low-rise developments, sporting virtual doormen and desired amenities, are cropping up.
