Property Description for 554 Macon Street

554 Macon St is a restorationist's delight — an exceptionally charming three-story, two-family brownstone, retaining a plethora of original detail. Built in 1889 in the Neo-Grec style by Walter M. Coots who designed many fine buildings in Bedford Stuyvesant, 554 Macon is located in prime Stuyvesant East just east of MXB and a stone’s throw to the express A train. 554 Macon is in need of systems modernizations and polish so bring your architect to make the most of this special home. As you step inside, you'll note the architectural elements that make this townhouse truly special. With four mantles, waist-high wainscoting, inlaid parquetry floors, pristine never-painted shutters, French and pocket doors, tin ceilings, original railings and newel post — you'll feel like 1889 is your future. There are even lincrusta remnants throughout the hallway. Crown moldings adorn the high ceilings, and northern and southern exposures light up the elegant space. 554 Macon is located near all the best that Bedford Stuyvesant has to offer including Chez Oskar, L'Antagoniste, Trad Room, Nana Ramen, Saraghina, Peaches, Seasons Nursery, Bar LunAtico, Mama Fox, Halsey Traders, Dick&Janes — and steps from the Utica express train station at Stuyvesant Ave.

Bedford Stuyvesant | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
