Property Description for 242 Gates Ave, 2

242 Gates Avenue #2 is an immaculately renovated four-floor apartment that blends modern convenience, stunning original detail, and an incredible interplay of light, texture, and design sensibility.

The historic details throughout the house are breathtaking with original plaster scrollwork and crown molding, exposed brickwork, joists, and original floors, restored original shutters, fireplace mantels, and mahogany railings. The elegant renovated bathrooms continue the blend of old and new and the kitchen is designed to gather and cook in, with ample counter and storage space, sunny corners, views, and easy access to the third-floor terrace.

Entering at the top of the stoop you'll find a welcoming foyer with original pier mirror, parlor doors and moldings, a brand new half bath, and a flexible front parlor, ideal for either additional living space or a bedroom.

Heading up the stairs to the main entertaining floor of the home, the third floor living space was opened up to provide a seamless flow through the living room, dining room, kitchen, and deck. The kitchen is a chef's dream with Wolf and Subzero appliances, Carrera marble counters, exposed brick, and a working wood-burning fireplace at counter height. The living room overlooks tree-lined Gates Avenue and the front garden, and has its own wood-burning fireplace.

Upstairs, past the lightwell that bathes the space in natural light, are two more bedrooms - one of which features a wood-burning fireplace. Also on this floor is a large, updated bathroom, complete with a double vanity, stall shower, and separate soaking tub. The fifth floor is home to the final bedroom, another full bathroom, in-unit laundry, and access to both the terrace and roof deck, which includes stadium seating. The roof boasts breathtaking 360 degrees views of Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn, Williamsburg and The Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Situated in Clinton Hill and within walking distance to Fort Greene, Prospect Heights and Bed Stuy, this home is near to the A, C, S, and G trains, and all of the fabulous restaurants and nightlife that have made Clinton Hill one of the fastest-growing neighborhoods in Brooklyn.

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
