Property Description for 238 Bergen Street

Set on a quiet, tree-lined block, 238 Bergen Street is a landmarked Italianate-style single-family townhouse dating back to 1855. The 20' by 45' home has been renovated to a discerning standard and serves in its original capacity as a grand 3,330 square-foot, five-bedroom, three-bathroom, single-family residence. The entire front facade, including the brick and cornice, was restored in the last year, resulting in a lovely polished appearance. Positioned on a 100'-deep lot, a lush, landscaped private garden completes the home, a verdant oasis in the heart of Boerum Hill. The formal entry to the home is on the parlor level, where 10' ceilings and an open floor plan give visitors an immediate sense of the home's grand proportions. At the rear, an oversized south-facing casement window overlooks the garden and sheds all-day light over the eat-in chef's kitchen. Complete with an 8-knob LaCanche range, tile by Mosaic House, a suite of top-end integrated appliances and a generous island with seating, the kitchen is the perfect place to gather with family or with friends. Separated by original pocket doors, the living space is centered on an original marble mantle and framed by classic oversized parlor windows. Other details like an ornate arched entryway coupled with the original entry door create a warm juxtaposition with the modern conveniences thoughtfully installed throughout in more recent years. The garden level has its own entrance with a foyer or mud room. Here, stunning black and white encaustic tile floors greet you; they are solid and warm underfoot. They lead to a quiet home office or bedroom toward the front of the home, and to a cozy den space, anchored by a wood-burning fireplace and overlooking the garden, at the rear. Floor-to-ceiling casement doors create an indoor-outdoor flow, perfect for the warmer months. This level enjoys access to a wet bar and full bathroom, which has been finished with a vanity by Waterworks and hand-painted wallpaper by Zuber. The second floor of the home is dedicated to the principal suite. With three windows facing south over the yard, the bedroom is both sunny and quiet. There is room enough for a casual seating space, too. A walk-in closet/dressing room leads to the windowed primary bathroom, finished with top-end fixtures and in beautiful Calacatta Paonazzo marble slabs. The secondary bedroom wing comprises the top floor of the home. Here, three generously-sized bedrooms share a pass-through double-vanity bathroom with beautiful tile floors by De Ferranti. Each bedroom has ample storage space, and two of the three have spacious walk-in closets. Multiple skylights on this level bring natural light into the home's center and exposed rough-hewn ceiling beams add warmth to the space. Additional home highlights include a full-sized laundry room with a wash sink and folding area on the second level, central heating and air, radiant heat floors on on the garden and parlor levels, and a full-sized basement for storage.

Boerum Hill | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Boerum Hill is a tiny, quiet, primarily residential neighborhood in Brooklyn. There are broad tree-lined streets that are filled with elegant three and four-story brownstones and townhouses, mostly built between 1840 and 1870. There is a definite family vibe to the neighborhood, but young professionals are moving in, and with them are coming trendy bars to cater to their desire for some measure of nightlife, without having to linger in Manhattan. These new bars and restaurants are being sandwiched in amongst existing shops on both Atlantic Avenue and Smith Street, which are the main commercial areas in Boerum Hill.

Boerum Hill offers a convenient location that is still able to maintain its small-neighborhood feel. Shopkeepers value their customers and remember their regulars. It continues to do what it was designed to do, namely provide small-town living in the very shadow of the big city. Boerum Hill is an easy commute to other parts of the city, making it easy to come home every day to the peace and tranquility of Boerum Hill while commuting to a job anywhere in the city.

The neighborhood is quite walkable and you can take the time to catch up with your neighbors while visiting on their stoops. Shopping on Atlantic Avenue is stress-free with no high pressure. You can meet with friends at any of the many coffee shops and while away pleasant hours in conversation. The dining scene on Smith Street is similarly laid-back. Don’t expect that there will be quite as much to see or do as there is in Manhattan, but there are a decent number of interesting bars and restaurants providing a measure of nightlife. The trade-off is worth it, as Boerum Hill provides a quiet, peaceful place to live and raise a family.
