Property Description for 453 State Street

453 State Street is a bespoke, meticulously renovated home on one of Boerum Hill's most desirable streets. While preserving its brownstone ornamental facade and mansard roof with dormer windows, 453 State has undergone a total reimagining of the interior to create a harmonious, contemporary single-family home. With approximately 4,000 square feet of living space and a nearly unheard-of 1,300+ square feet of outdoor space across six levels, the layout was completely transformed to provide as much natural light and open space as possible. A dramatic double-height family room seamlessly connects the parlor floor, garden level, and yard to create a space that is nearly impossible to find in a traditional townhouse.

Every inch of this home has been thoughtfully designed with the contemporary end user in mind. The lowermost level of the home is a fully finished, climate-controlled rec room with a powder room and secondary laundry room. It will make a perfect home theater, gym, wine cellar, or kids' playroom. The 60' deep garden floor features a guest suite with a private entrance, wet bar, formal dining area, and a cathedral-ceiling family room that opens directly onto the rear yard. The parlor level of this home has an additional family room with an original marble mantle, breakfast area, and a jaw-dropping chef's kitchen. Beloved in the culinary world, your new kitchen features a 43' La Cornue range replete with two electric convection ovens and five powerful gas burners. The kitchen sink is a marbled rectangular farmhouse sink. The integrated appliances include a 42' Sub-Zero fridge. Enjoy cooking and entertaining on this illuminated level of the home with the rear glass wall overlooking your private landscaped garden.

The primary suite occupies the entire third floor with a 20' bedroom featuring an enormous private terrace and a massive separate dressing room. The primary bathroom is magnificently appointed with floor-to-ceiling marble, a steam shower with marble mosaic floor, and a separate powder room. The double vanity is custom marble and millwork with signature hardware.

The fourth floor has two large bedrooms with two bathrooms; the north-facing bedroom is configured with an en-suite bathroom. The fifth floor is a hidden gem-totally invisible from street level, with sliding glass doors that open onto both north and south-facing decks. This level, with sweeping skyline views, will make an incredible office, additional bar for rooftop entertaining, or possibly even a fifth bedroom.

The home's white oak herringbone floors, designer light fixtures, multi-zone central AC and heat, 1" interior doors with Tumalo walnut knobs, new windows, and custom stonework offer refined modern craftsmanship with the sensibility of a classic townhome.

Located in Brownstone Brooklyn's most central location on one of its most desirable streets, your new home is minutes from Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, the Apple Store, BAM, the Brooklyn Paramount Theater, Dekalb Market, Equinox Gym, Sahadi's, Barclays Center, the Ace Hotel, 11 subway lines, and the LIRR at Atlantic Avenue.

Boerum Hill | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Boerum Hill is a tiny, quiet, primarily residential neighborhood in Brooklyn. There are broad tree-lined streets that are filled with elegant three and four-story brownstones and townhouses, mostly built between 1840 and 1870. There is a definite family vibe to the neighborhood, but young professionals are moving in, and with them are coming trendy bars to cater to their desire for some measure of nightlife, without having to linger in Manhattan. These new bars and restaurants are being sandwiched in amongst existing shops on both Atlantic Avenue and Smith Street, which are the main commercial areas in Boerum Hill.

Boerum Hill offers a convenient location that is still able to maintain its small-neighborhood feel. Shopkeepers value their customers and remember their regulars. It continues to do what it was designed to do, namely provide small-town living in the very shadow of the big city. Boerum Hill is an easy commute to other parts of the city, making it easy to come home every day to the peace and tranquility of Boerum Hill while commuting to a job anywhere in the city.

The neighborhood is quite walkable and you can take the time to catch up with your neighbors while visiting on their stoops. Shopping on Atlantic Avenue is stress-free with no high pressure. You can meet with friends at any of the many coffee shops and while away pleasant hours in conversation. The dining scene on Smith Street is similarly laid-back. Don’t expect that there will be quite as much to see or do as there is in Manhattan, but there are a decent number of interesting bars and restaurants providing a measure of nightlife. The trade-off is worth it, as Boerum Hill provides a quiet, peaceful place to live and raise a family.
