Property Description for 285 Lafayette Street, 2-B

Presenting Residence 2B at 285 Lafayette Street, a corner four-bedroom loft stretching nearly 4,100 square feet at the prime intersection of SoHo and NoLiTa. Originally built in the turn of the century as a chocolate factory, the building became one of the first full-service condominiums in the area. Its history is evident in Residence 2B: original cast iron columns and wood beams punctuate the soaring 12' ceilings, creating an impressive volume of space. A true loft, the open kitchen, dining, and living areas offer many possible configurations; the four bedrooms are spacious yet each tucked away privately. Enter directly from the elevator into the loft through a proper foyer. The great room spans over 1,600 square feet. Refinished Brazilian cherry floors add warmth to this voluminous space, complementing the warm western light that pours in through the 10-foot windows. Currently, you'll find a large dining area opposite the kitchen, which itself has more casual bar seating. Passing through one set of columns there is the first of multiple lounging areas. There are six columns just in the great room, with an additional five in the rest of the loft. The chef's kitchen opens directly into the great room, and is aptly appointed with plenty of storage, stainless steel appliances - including a Viking range and a wine refrigerator - white lacquer cabinetry and black granite countertops. Adjacent to the kitchen is a laundry room/pantry that includes an additional catering refrigerator. The principal suite, a loft unto itself, faces north and gets serene northern light. There is a large sitting area by the windows, walls of custom closets, and two cast iron columns that add structure to this open space. The principal bathroom is fully renovated with double vanity, stall shower, and freestanding Waterworks soaking tub. The secondary bedroom suite also faces north and has two large closets, a renovated bathroom, and its own entry gallery. The third bedroom sits on the northwest corner of the loft and has a quintessential view into SoHo. It shares a full bathroom and a private hallway with the fourth bedroom. A home office or library is nicely tucked away on the east side of the loft, adjacent to a well appointed powder room. Residence 2B has through-wall heating and cooling, and comes with private storage. A piece of SoHo history, 285 Lafayette Street is a boutique condominium that offers a 24-hour concierge, a common landscaped roof terrace, and two entrances for exceptional privacy and security. SoHo, as one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in the city, has no shortage of exceptional dining - for example, Torrisi, Eataly, Sant Ambroeus, and Balthazar - shopping, and leisure that residents can easily take advantage of.

Little Italy | Manhattan

Quick Profile

It’s fitting that the neighborhood’s name is Little Italy because It’s been getting smaller for decades. The Italian immigrants that flooded New York City and built the vibrant ethnic enclave in the 1860s and 1880s eventually left for greener pastures, assimilating into other parts of the city or suburbs. The disappearance of Little Italy is a sad story as far as neighborhoods go, but it’s one that should be told.

Little Italy once spanned 50 square blocks and represented the biggest population of Italian immigrants in America. But in recent years, it’s been squeezed by the growth of Chinatown and SoHo and muscled from the rebranding of other neighborhoods like NoHo and NoLIta. In fact, NoLita was the culprit that cut the neighborhood in two. Little Italy’s boundaries may vary depending upon who you ask. Today it’s down to just a few blocks along Mulberry Street.

One of the best ways to experience Little Italy is through its food. Take your pick from mom-and-pop markets, meat and cheese shops, or authentic sit-down restaurants that offer the very best in Italian cuisine.

Every September (since 1926), the neighborhood hosts the Feast of San Gennaro, which celebrates the patron Saint of Naples Italy. 11 days of food, colorful parades, music performances, and more food. The aroma of zeppole and grilled sausage can be smelt for blocks. Try planning your visit around this festive time. It’s well worth it.
