Property Description for 278 Monroe Street

Welcome to 278 Monroe Street, now fully transformed and ready for its next owner to create lasting memories. Nestled on one of the most picturesque blocks in historic Bedford-Stuyvesant, this grand 4-story landmarked townhouse is a rare offering—one of the oldest and most storied homes in the neighborhood, originally built circa 1871. Meticulously restored and thoughtfully redesigned, this legal two-family residence blends rich architectural heritage with luxurious, contemporary living across nearly 3,800 square feet of interior space. Configured as an elegant owner’s triplex over a beautifully appointed garden-level apartment, the home offers space, flexibility, and timeless appeal. The parlor floor impresses with soaring ceilings and a sun-drenched open-concept living and dining space, seamlessly connected to a chef’s kitchen featuring top-of-the-line appliances, a large center island, natural Calacatta stone countertops, pot filler, walk-in pantry, and refined cabinetry. From the kitchen, step out to a private deck and south-facing backyard—a rare, peaceful retreat perfect for entertaining or relaxing. The primary suite spans the entire second floor, offering a level of space and privacy rarely found in Brooklyn townhomes. At nearly 750 square feet, it includes a king-size bedroom, an expansive spa-inspired bathroom with soaking tub and walk-in shower, a fully built-out walk-in closet, a separate home office or nursery, and a washer/dryer. With oversized windows and elegant finishes, the suite feels like a private oasis inside your home. The top floor offers three additional bedrooms and two full bathrooms, providing generous flexibility for family, guests, or creative use. The garden-level apartment features a spacious 1-bedroom, 1.5-bath layout with its own private entrance, a full kitchen, washer/dryer, and access to the rear yard—perfect as a high-quality rental unit, in-law suite, or guest quarters. Additionally there is a fully funished cellar, equipped with a half bathroom and open space perfect for recreation, home gym, storage and play area This home’s curb appeal is unmatched. The facade has been meticulously restored using individually crafted and hand-laid cedar wood shingles, installed to meet the exacting standards of the Landmarks Preservation Committee. A striking solid mahogany wood front door provides a rich, elegant welcome and completes the facade’s stunning transformation. Throughout the interior, original architectural details have been preserved and enhanced, including wide-plank oak flooring, oversized windows, custom millwork, and designer lighting. Every inch of this home reflects craftsmanship, quality, and care. Located just blocks from Herbert Von King Park, and a short stroll to beloved Bed-Stuy and Bushwick favorites like Clementine Bakery, Saraghina, Bar LunÀtico, L’Antagoniste, and more. The A/C train at Nostrand Avenue puts Manhattan within easy reach, while the charm of Bedford and Tompkins Avenues is just around the corner. 278 Monroe Street isn’t just a home — it’s a piece of Brooklyn history, beautifully reborn.

Bedford Stuyvesant | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
