Property Description for 51 Jay Street, PH-B

Designer Duplex Penthouse with Private Parking Perched atop a converted warehouse in the heart of DUMBO, this one-of-a-kind trophy penthouse—featured in Architectural Digest—has been masterfully reimagined by acclaimed designer Michael Aiduss. Every inch of this 4-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom duplex reflects the highest level of craftsmanship and timeless sophistication. The home’s transformation showcases exquisite materials and thoughtful details, from white oak herringbone floors and lacquered glass-trim pocket doors to brass fixtures, French-inspired moldings, and graceful archways. The sprawling great room, wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass, is ideal for entertaining with seamless access to a spectacular 2,500 sq. ft. landscaped terrace designed by Gunn Landscape Architecture. The custom lacquered kitchen, finished in rich Aegean blue with bronze accents and Calacatta marble, is as functional as it is striking. The primary suite evokes a serene retreat with French moldings, a private Zen terrace, and a spa-like bath clad in Calacatta gold marble and Venetian plaster. A handsome office/bedroom with built-ins and a full black-tiled bath completes this wing. Upstairs, two additional expansive bedroom suites offer refined comfort, including one with Schumacher wallcoverings and Turkish marble, and another with a walk-in closet and en-suite bath. Both open onto a sunlit upper terrace with sweeping sunset views. At 51 Jay, residents enjoy a collection of amenities, including 24-hour concierge service, on-site heated parking available with the rental, a fitness and yoga studio, a residents’ lounge, a landscaped courtyard, and a dramatic double-height lobby that sets the tone for this distinguished address.

Dumbo | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

DUMBO, which is an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, used to be a lively industrial and manufacturing zone, full of large factories and warehouses. These buildings have now been converted into expansive lofts, theaters, galleries, and office spaces for start-up companies. These larger residential spaces are attractive to families and creative artists and writers who need space to dream and create.

DUMBO was named in 1978 as a sort of reverse marketing ploy to try to keep people from swarming into the area, attracted by the quaint tree-lined streets, elegant historic brownstones, large lofts, and views of Lower Manhattan. It was felt that this influx of people would change the nature of the neighborhood. It was hoped that by giving the area a ridiculous name, nobody would want to live there.

Many of the neighborhood’s bars, hotels, and restaurants capitalize on the stunning waterfront views and the Manhattan skyline in the background. Interesting and fun cultural events are held under and around the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges that connect DUMBO to Manhattan. One of these is the annual Oktoberfest.

With beautiful vignettes of the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges being framed around every corner, DUMBO provides residents and tourists with charming, and often surprising, views. Because the neighborhood is eminently walkable and filled with unique shops, it feels like a small town on the edge of a major urban waterfront. Once people move to DUMBO, they tend to stay and become involved in the community.
