Property Description for 1375 Dean Street, B

The Elkins House Condominium is truly a one-of-a-kind residential restoration and conversion project in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Individually Landmarked and on the National Register of Historic Places, this 1850's wood frame villa masterpiece - the first house in Crown Heights and the last remaining of its type - is now the perfect marriage of old and new. The building features four generously-sized, unique duplex units, ranging from 2000 to 2600 square feet with four to five bedrooms and three bathrooms. Each individually tailored unit captures the size, the look, and the feel of a large private townhouse. Earn the distinction of living in Crown Heights’ oldest house while enjoying the luxuries of a truly stunning modern and impeccably designed home. This gracious 2-story, 5-bedroom condo is nestled within a magnificent pre-Civil War wood-frame villa, a remnant from the days when Brooklyn was tranquil farmland. Once a neighborhood eyesore that had fallen into disrepair, this rare Landmark house has been lovingly and painstakingly restored by Komaru Enterprises to a modern day version of its former glory. As you step from the landscaped front yard into the private entrance to this home, you’ll be greeted by a flight of stairs made from the house’s original floor joists. On reaching the home’s first floor, you’ll be amazed by the scale of the room in front of you: a vast living and dining area with soaring 10-foot ceilings, yet configured in such a way as to feel cozy and intimate at the same time. Modern fixtures such as Artemide and Foscarini lighting and a remote-controlled gas fireplace juxtapose with rich historical touches, such as an exposed-brick wall and the original-wood staircase. Entering the adjoining kitchen, you will be awed by the crisp Italian cabinetry and top-of-the-line appliances, all centered around a sleek waterfall island. Off the living area are two large bedrooms, each with its own sunny balcony—the perfect spot for sipping coffee in the mornings. A full bathroom finishes this floor. Up a flight of stairs are three additional bedrooms, all with skylights that fill the spacious rooms with golden sunlight. The largest of these, the master, has an ensuite bathroom with double sinks and radiant-heated floors to warm chilly feet on cold mornings. But most glorious of all on this floor is the private roof deck, where candle-lit summer dinners will linger into the night. For additional outdoor entertaining and living, the front yard of the Elkins house is part of this home, with dining patio and greenery. No modern convenience has been spared to make this immaculate home as comfortable as possible, from central HVAC to a Lutron smart home system to an app-controlled video intercom. You might never leave, if not for the charming neighborhood: the tree-lined streets, bustling shops, and trendy restaurants of Crown Heights, plus easy access to A, C and 3 trains. Crown Heights | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Originally known as Crown Hill by the Lenape Indians that lived there, Crown Heights has evolved into a diverse neighborhood, occupied primarily by Hasidic Jews and one of the largest Caribbean populations to be found anywhere outside of the West Indies.

Head over to Nostrand Avenue, one of the main West Indian commercial areas in the neighborhood, which is lined with stores that have been in those exact same places for generations, providing their goods and services to area residents. Kingston Avenue has similar commercial activities that support the Jewish community, and Franklin Avenue shows the most signs of change and gentrification, with an ever-expanding mix of yoga studios, coffee shops, and organic grocery stores that serve the influx of young professionals. No matter which of these areas you visit, you will find an interesting mix of businesses that you wouldn’t normally picture as existing side-by-side. It is all part of the cultural diversity of Crown Heights.

The neighborhood is bisected, from east to west, by Eastern Parkway, which is a beautiful, 3-mile-long boulevard lined with mature trees. This leafy oasis was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, famed designer of Central Park, the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina, and the U. S. Capitol in Washington, D. C.

You will find a mix of low-rise apartment buildings, large middle-class elevator buildings, brownstones, and some luxury buildings. Century-old architecture stands next to modern residential developments in a visually interesting mix of styles, much as the diversity of the residents exists. People who would not normally meet and mix are forging new pathways to cultural understanding by working, living, and playing together in the same neighborhood.
