Property Description for 215 West 137th Street, TRIPLEX

Available for rent, this impeccably restored and turnkey Triplex in a brownstone sits on one of the best-preserved townhouse blocks in Manhattan, offering refined elegance, modern comfort, and rare private parking. The home is configured as a spacious owner’s triplex providing exceptional flexibility for living, working, or hosting.

The parlor floor welcomes you with grand double doors, an entrance vestibule, soaring 11-foot ceilings, and beautifully preserved 19th-century details. Pocket doors open to a sun-filled living room anchored by a curved alabaster fireplace, one of several distinctive fireplaces throughout. The expansive chef’s kitchen is outfitted with walnut counters, marble work surfaces, and premium appliances by Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Miele. A stunning formal dining room features quarter-sawn wood paneling, a coffered ceiling, a penny-tile hearth, and a dramatic stained-glass window. A windowed butler’s pantry with powder room leads to the elevated rear terrace overlooking the gated King’s Alley.

Upstairs, the serene north-facing primary bedroom includes a dressing room and an en-suite bath with custom woodwork, an oversized soaking tub, and stained-glass window. Pocket doors connect to a wet bar and a grand south-facing room with leafy views of the historic block. The top floor offers two additional bedrooms, including a north-facing suite with a windowed bath, a bright front-facing bedroom, and a spa-sized bathroom with clawfoot tub, walk-in shower, double sinks, and skylights.

The garden level features generous north and south facing rooms, a kitchen, full bath, and private front entrance; ideal for additional living space, home offices, or guest accommodations. The finished basement houses mechanicals, laundry, and a large tiled recreation or storage space.

Modern upgrades include three-zone central air conditioning, new wood windows with sound-dampening lamination in bedrooms, rooftop solar panels, and direct access to a private rear garage opening onto the Striver’s Row carriage lane. The property offers either two private parking spaces, or one parking space plus a dedicated studio gym, providing a rare level of convenience and flexibility. The garage is also ready for electric vehicle charging. A unique opportunity to rent a classic New York brownstone.

Harlem | Manhattan

Quick Profile

The neighborhood called West Harlem by the locals is known as Manhattanville to neighborhood newcomers. The area is culturally diverse and might be considered a microcosm of the city as a whole.

Columbia University has recently expanded into the area, which is attracting student residents from all over the world. Together with students from the City College of New York and young professionals fleeing higher prices in other neighborhoods, this influx of younger residents has brought with it more restaurants and bars on W 125th Street to serve this clientele. There are also new ventures, like a rock-climbing gym, to cater to the interests of these students and young professionals. At the same time, there are many small, family-owned shops and restaurants that have been anchors of the neighborhood for multiple generations.

The area has been through a housing upgrade, as older properties have been renovated and abandoned properties have been razed to make room for new development. There are still reasonably priced apartments available. Young professionals are finding that there is a certain cachet to living in West Harlem. It provides a convenient commute to the city and all of its amenities, while providing a sense of escape at the end of a long work day.

While rentals are popular with the student population, the young professionals are delighted to find pre-war brownstones, pre-war co-ops (including some income-capped HDFCs for lower- and middle-income buyers), and post-war condos that they can afford, although prices are rising. Some new low-rise developments, sporting virtual doormen and desired amenities, are cropping up.
