Wonderful 208 East 20th Street No. 2 ...

This is a cherished house-kept, loved, and very specially lived in by generations of New Yorkers. It has held art and ideas, great joy and profound loss, and all that gathers quietly within a home over time. Carefully maintained and thoughtfully updated when needed, it has continued to evolve without losing the character that makes it so rare. Its history has not been polished away. It remains present in the architecture, the atmosphere, and the unmistakable feeling of lives fully lived here.

One flight up, on the second floor of this two-residence Gramercy Park carriage house, a singular loft unfolds beneath a twenty-foot vaulted ceiling and a skylight measuring nearly ten by twelve feet. Daylight arrives from above and through windows facing north, south, and east, moving gently across the oak floors from morning into evening.

Over the years, these rooms have welcomed notable figures from the worlds of film, art, science, and photography. It is easy to understand why. There is a sense of freedom here-the scale, privacy, and creative possibility so many people imagine when dreaming of a true New York loft, yet so rarely find still intact.
Though one open space, the loft lends itself naturally to distinct ways of living. There is room for a bedroom setting, a living and dining area, and an office or creative workspace-each finding its own place without diminishing the openness that makes the room so special.
There is a private entrance hall, beautifully preserved windowpanes and trimmings, and all manner of unexpected corners to discover. The arrangement is wonderfully adaptable, inviting a way of living that feels entirely personal rather than prescribed.

Beyond the interior is approximately 400 square feet of secluded, decked rooftop space-a place to gather beneath the open sky, work quietly, disappear for a while, or, as Sherman Kelly wrote and King Harvest sang, go dancing in the moonlight.

This is not an ordinary loft. It is a space for making things, thinking things, and living a little differently. Its architecture has been kept, its character remains, and its next chapter has yet to be written.
