Oakland Gardens is located in the largest, most diverse, and densely populated borough of Queens, yet, it feels like you’re smack dab in the middle of the suburbs. An enclave of Bayside, Oakland Gardens is located in the northeastern section of Queens and is surrounded by parks, golf courses, and athletic fields.
Bounded by The Long Island Expressway to the north, Alley Pond Park to the South, Union Turnpike to the south, and Cunningham Park to the west.
The neighborhood's history is long and dates back to the early Dutch days. In 1645 John Hicks received land grants from the Dutch, settled the lands, and built his sprawling estate. In the early 19th century, the lands were passed on to the Lawrence Family. In 1847, Fredrick Newbold Lawrence built the Oaks mansion. Many historians say the Oakland in Oakland Gardens derives from the Oaks mansion.
Housing in Oakland Gardens consists mostly of one and two-family homes. There are also co-ops, condos and apartments. The average listed price is $307k with a median listed price of 319k. The average price per square foot in Oakland Gardens is $434.
Bell Avenue is one of the neighborhood's commercial arteries and offers a hub of shops and places to eat. Many residents flock to nearby Bayside for additional options. The commute from Oakland Gardens to Manhattan is a little under 30 minutes via the Long Island Railroad. Bus lines also service the neighborhood, but the journey takes over an hour. Most residents commuting to Manhattan use the LIRR or drive their cars.
The New York Public School System services the neighborhood of Oakland Gardens. Benjamin N. Cardozo High School and P.S. 203 have a notable reputation.

Alley Pond Adventure Course is a unique place to visit because it teaches trust, team building, and problem-solving through a series of challenge and rope courses. The program is a two-hour adventure with high and low rope courses for all to enjoy.
Alley Pond Environmental Center – A fantastic nature center surrounded by lush trails and natural landscapes. The center offers a wide variety of environmental education programs. They also have children’s events with small animals.
What You Might See
Big green spaces to the north and south of the neighborhood. You’ll also see a new bicycle path along 73rd Avenue. The popular path connects Oakland Gardens green spaces and makes the Eastern Queens Greenway more accessible.
What You Don’t Know
The Long Island Motor Parkway, also known as the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, was one of America’s first roadway designed solely for automobiles. Built by entrepreneur William Kissan Vanderbilt II in 1908, it served as one of the first prototypes for the modern-day highway. It ran through Oakland Gardens and parts of Long Island.
