In the early 19th century, the lands were passed on to the Lawrence Family. In 1847, Fredrick Newbold Lawrence built the Oaks mansion. Many historians say the Oakland in Oakland Gardens derives from the Oaks mansion.

Bell Avenue is one of the neighborhood's commercial arteries and offers a hub of shops and places to eat. Many residents flock to nearby Bayside for additional options.
