Oakland Gardens is located in the largest, most diverse, and densely populated borough of Queens, yet, it feels like you’re smack dab in the middle of the suburbs. The neighborhood's history is long and dates back to the early Dutch days. In 1645 John Hicks received land grants from the Dutch, settled the lands, and built his sprawling estate. In the early 19th century, the lands were passed on to the Lawrence Family. In 1847, Fredrick Newbold Lawrence built the Oaks mansion. Many historians say the Oakland in Oakland Gardens derives from the Oaks mansion. 

Housing in Oakland Gardens consists mostly of one and two-family homes. There are also co-ops, condos and apartments. The average listed price is $307k with a median listed price of 319k. The average price per square foot in Oakland Gardens is $434. 

Bell Avenue is one of the neighborhood's commercial arteries and offers a hub of shops and places to eat. Many residents flock to nearby Bayside for additional options. The commute from Oakland Gardens to Manhattan is a little under 30 minutes via the Long Island Railroad. Bus lines also service the neighborhood, but the journey takes over an hour. Most residents commuting to Manhattan use the LIRR or drive their cars. 

The New York Public School System services the neighborhood of Oakland Gardens. Benjamin N. Cardozo High School and P.S. 203 have a notable reputation.
